The Invention of Wings

By: Sue Monk Kidd

2015 Community Read- Adult and High School Selection

Geneva Reads Inc. is proud to present a month-long series of events focused on its 2015 Community Read selection, “The Invention of Wings,” a novel by Sue Monk Kidd, the best-selling author of “The Secret Life of Bees.”

Copies of the book, purchased with funding from the Wyckoff Family Foundation, are being provided for Geneva Public Library patrons, our new Family Reading Kits and reading groups at Geneva High School.

“The Invention of Wings” was Amazon’s top-selling book in 2014, and Oprah Winfrey has purchased the writes to produce a movie based on it.

Synopsis:

Told in two voices that alternate by chapter, “The Invention of Wings” is the story of slave girl Hetty (“Handful”) and Sarah Grimke, who receives Hetty as a gift on her 11th birthday. The book’s major themes are slavery, women’s rights and quilting, which also appear among the companion books we’ve chosen for distribution to younger Geneva school children.
